Second Portfolio: Disease Insight Analysis

Second Portfolio: Disease Insight Analysis

It has been two weeks since I enrolled for SideHustle Bootcamp and the journey so far has been both exciting and challenging. This week my team (Data Analytics - Team 4) was tasked with preparing a disease insight analysis with a focus on two diseases. We decided to work on global Covid 19 and HIV/AIDS data.

Data was scraped from Kaggle for the COVID dataset and CORGIS Dataset Project for the HIV/AIDS dataset. Both datasets were transformed with Power Query. The transformation process involved removing irrelevant columns, renaming each column, and changing data types.

After transforming the datasets, the data were then loaded and ready for analysis.

GLOBAL COVID ANALYSIS

An image of the Global COVID Analysis is seen above.

From the dashboard, a total of 19 million COVID cases were recorded with a total recovery of over 12 million people. 0ver 712,000 deaths were recorded globally in the same period.

In the first chart, based on the continent, North America had the highest number of COVID cases (6 million) followed by Asia (5 million). Australia/Oceania had the lowest number of COVID cases (21,000). For the total number of deaths from COVID, North America had the highest (230,000), followed by Europe (205,000), and South America (155,000). Australia/Oceania had the lowest number of deaths (277 deaths).

Asia had the greatest disease burden with a prevalence rate of 190,868 cases per 1 million population. Australia/Oceania had the lowest prevalence rate of 1,093 cases per 1 million.

In the fourth chart, Europe had the highest mortality rate of 9,035 per 1 million population. Also, Australia/Oceania had the lowest mortality rate (14 per 1 million).

Based on Country/Region, the top five countries with the highest mortality rate per 1 million included: San Marino (1238), Belgium (850), United Kingdom (683), Andorra (673) and Peru (619). Finally, Qatar had the highest prevalence rate of 39,922 cases per 1 million.

GLOBAL HIV/AIDS ANALYSIS (1990-2020)

The dashboard above shows the 30 years Global HIV analysis.

From 1990 to 2020, a total of 633 million people of all ages lived with HIV globally. Of the total number of people, in the same period, 28 million deaths from HIV/AIDS were recorded. 7 million children below 14 years died of AIDS while 21 million adults above 15 years died from AIDS-related causes.

In the first chart, there was an upward trend in the recorded cases of people living with HIV globally from 1990 to 2020. Also, the second chart shows a downtrend in the recorded number of new HIV infections the same can be said of AIDS-related deaths of all ages. Although, AIDS-related deaths peaked in 2005 and plunged from 2005 to 2020.

In the third chart, Out of the top 10 countries, South Africa had the highest number of people living with HIV (>132 million people). South Africa also had the highest number of AIDS-related deaths (>4 million) from 1990-2020. Georgia had the lowest number of recorded deaths from AIDS (3,100).

In the last chart, South Africa had the highest AIDS-related deaths of children below 14 years and adults above 15 years old.
